Security of EU countries from the perspective of Supreme Audit Institutions - high-level conference at NIK

On 3 June 2025, a prestigious conference took place at the NIK headquarters in Warsaw. Heads of Supreme Audit Institutions and international organisations gathered to discuss the security of EU countries from the SAIs’ perspective. That was the first event of this magnitude in NIK’s history, held as part of the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Ensuring security and stability of specific countries is not a responsibility of a single individual but a collective effort. It requires expertise and close cooperation. That is why, more than 100 delegates representing 30 countries met at the NIK headquarters in Warsaw to discuss the role of Supreme Audit Institutions at the time when Poland and the European Union are facing serious challenges in a very complex geopolitical circumstances. For it is only through dialogue, cooperation, and exchange of experience that we can strengthen defence, define challenges and develop effective solutions for the future.

The conference was attended by high-level representatives of INTERPOL, OECD, INTOSAI, IBAN and heads of Supreme Audit Institutions of most EU countries.

That was the first event of this magnitude in the history of the Supreme Audit Office of Poland. NIK plays a key role in maintaining and strengthening Poland's national security through broad-based auditing. As a supreme state audit body, it conducts audits in all areas where public funds and state property are used, making sure that public institutions operate effectively, efficiently and in line with their mandates. It also applies to the sectors of defence and security in its broadest sense, also concerning economy, energy and cyber-security.

In the light of dynamic developments in the European Union, in an era of evolving threats and unprecedented challenges, national security is the pillar of stability and prosperity of the EU countries and their citizens. Under such conditions, confidence in audit institutions striving for systemic improvement of the functioning of the state and its institutions is pivotal.
