Last year Auditor General Maksim Acevski requested NIK for a peer review. The visit to Skopje aimed at providing details of the peer review (scope, schedule, resources) and discussing execution of the Memorandum of Understanding between NIK and the SAI of North Macedonia signed in October 2023.
Peer review is a tool used by Supreme Audit Institutions to have their work reviewed externally. The review made by SAIs helps improve the quality of work of audit institutions. In the 105 years’ history of the Polish SAI, the experts of NIK took part in such peer reviews many times, among others in the SAI of Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Indonesia, Slovakia, Hungary and in the European Court of Accounts. Invitation to work on a project of this kind is a distinction, an honour and a sign of trust in NIK’s work.
NIK President met also with Vice-President of the Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia Goran Misovski. They discussed the role of SAIs in democratic states of law. Constitutional, independent and professional audit institutions provide the guarantee of effective public spending. The Assembly of the Republic of North Macedonia is a one-chamber parliament of North Macedonia, composed of 120-123 deputies appointed for a 4-year term, depending on the number of deputies appointed by the Macedonian diaspora. The Supreme Audit Office is the best-rated state institution in Macedonia in terms of meeting requirements for North Macedonia to join the European Union. The Macedonian SAI still lacks a place in the Basic Law of North Macedonia and an amendment to the Act on the Supreme Audit Office. These are the Parliament’s tasks which were discussed in the Parliament of Macedonia.
