Kjell Kristian Dørum from the Supreme Audit Institution of Norway (equivalent of the Polish NIK) admits that corruption does not leave out his country, either. In the past years a few spectacular court cases have been pending against officials who committed embezzlement, accepted bribes or simply misappropriated public money.
How does Norway fight against corruption? Interview with Kjell Kristian Dørum
”Fortunately, the highest authority levels in Norway are free from corruption” - says Dørum. He explains that the majority of detected crimes pertained to public companies operating at the local level. In the past years the government has taken great efforts to fight against dishonest officials. ”In general, there are many powerful forces involved in the fight against corruption in Norway” - claims the auditor. Besides the Police and the Office of the Auditor General he mentions also other public institutions, media or non-governmental organisations.
Corruption cases happen in Norway from time to time but this phenomenon does not really grow any stronger. ”It’s not without significance that Norway is an open, democratic and liberal country” - explains Dørum. And he adds: ”I’d say that when you go to the war with corruption, democracy gives you a major advantage”.
