Internal audit strategies

The main task of the Subcommittee on Internal Control Standards, one of the structures of INTOSAI (International Organisation of Supreme Audit Institutions, which at present gathers 190 members) is to support the public sector in financial management and ensuring better accountability. NIK employees who are engaged in the works of the Subcommittee participate in trainings and conferences dedicated to internal audit and internal control.

At the beginning of October 2011, the Internal Audit Services of the European Commission organised a conference on internal audit strategies and practices, which gathered several hundreds of participants, including representatives of the private and public sectors. Among the lecturers, there were numerous professionals in internal audit, including, for instance, Catherine Day, Secretary-General of the European Commission, and Carman Lapointe, Under-Secretary-General for Internal Oversight Service of the United Nations.

Internal audit, which comprises both elements of systematic assessment of an institution’s functioning and consultancy services for its management, can be a very useful tool for supporting activities of each organisation. Independent and objective work of internal auditors is aimed at supporting an entity’s management in accomplishing their objectives and tasks.

Within its chairmanship of the INTOSAI Subcommittee on Internal Control Standards, the NIK intends to accomplish four goals by 2013: to integrate various internal control concepts, to create a single document with standards, to work out examples of internal control measures for all internal control objectives and components, as well as to develop a document that would summarise internal control functioning.
