ISO 14001:2004 for the NIK’s Environmental Management System

For almost two years, the NIK has been successively implementing ”The Environmental Policy of the NIK”. To assist successful implementation of the policy, the Environmental Management System was developed. Germanischer Lloyd Polen has examined how the NIK implements and maintains its Environmental Management System and whether the NIK complies with the policy adopted in the field. The certification has confirmed that the activities of the NIK to date meet the requirements of ISO 14001:2004.

So far, within the Environmental Management System the NIK has managed to improve its waste management, which has led to a significant improvement in waste segregation. Over the two last years, selectively collected waste packaging constituted over 60 percent of all municipal waste, which is much more in comparison with last years, when this percentage did not exceed 17. Moreover, in 2010, the use of paper at the NIK decreased by one-fifth, as compared to previous years. The reduced use of paper and improvement in the segregation of waste have both resulted in notable savings.

”The Environmental Policy of the NIK” comprises a set of requirements, such as, for example, rational use of electric energy, thermal energy and natural resources, promoting pro-environmental attitudes and environmentally-friendly behaviours.

The ISO 140001:2004 certificate granted to the NIK is valid for the next three years, until July 2014.
