Over the last years, the international community has signed numerous agreements and conventions related to global problems in the field of environmental protection. Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) are authorised to monitor activities undertaken by the governments of their countries with regard to implementation of these agreements. The Working Group on Environmental Auditing that operates within INTOSAI has just completed works on a primer on audits in this area. The NIK, as a member of the Steering Committee of the Working Group, actively participated in the elaboration of this primer by sharing its experience and by providing its opinion on the final version of the publication.
The primer is composed of two main parts. The first is dedicated to international agreements: their role, importance, types and subsequent stages of their implementation at the national level. The other part contains information on international audits in the field that have been so far carried out by the members of the Working Group, including the NIK. The primer contains, among others, information on the Polish audit on handling genetically modified organisms and on the audit of the implementation of the convention on international trade in endangered fauna and flora species.
The primer was officially presented during the 20th INTOSAI Congress that was held at the end of November 2010 in Johannesburg.
