In April 2007, the UEFA took a decision on awarding Poland and Ukraine with the organisation of the EURO 2012 Football Championship. Soon after that, preparations for this big football event have started. The NIK and the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine have been auditing the progress of preparations on a regular basis. The first audit started in 2008, the second in 2009, and the third at the end of 2010 and at the beginning of 2011.
The fourth audit is to commence at the end of 2011. A week ago, the representatives of the two SAI signed an agreement on this planned audit. Polish and Ukrainian auditors are to check how investments in sports facilities, infrastructure and accommodation are progressing, as well as the preparations related to public transport services. Auditors will also scrutinise the realisation of projects aimed at improving movement at border crossings, security and medical services.
Audits in the two countries are carried out independently, in compliance with national mandates and in accordance with audit programmes developed by the two SAIs. A joint audit report will be signed in March 2012.
