This is a distinction for the Polish Supreme Audit Office and also the first time when the function of external auditor is awarded to the SAI of a "new" member state (that joined CERN after 1989).
CERN was established in 1954. Its headquarters are located in Geneva. Currently, the organisation associates 20 countries. Its budget exceeds CHF 1 billion. Approx. 3 thousand scholars and technologists work there on a regular basis but the number of people cooperating with CERN reaches 8 thousand. The recent grand undertaking of the organisation was activation of the particle accelerator, called the Large Hadron Collider.
