NIK in the Governing Board of INTOSAI

The Governing Board of the European Organisation of the Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI) resolved that NIK would represent EUROSAI in the Governing Board of the International Organisation of the Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI). The tenure of NIK will start next year and will last for 6 years.

NIK in the INTOSAI

INTOSAI is an autonomous and apolitical organisation which was established to support its members in the public sector auditing. Therefore, it develops standards and guidelines, organises conferences and fora for the exchange of experience. By promoting independence of a state audit institution, it contributes to spreading the concept of democracy and sound management globally. The representatives of INTOSAI emphasise that there is no fully democratic country without an audit authority that would be fully independent from the government.

This decision that NIK should be part of the Governing Board of INTOSAI is a distinction for the Polish SAI and opens up new opportunities for the Supreme Audit Office. NIK will have a bigger impact on the policy pursued by INTOSAI, e.g. promoting the independent state audit all around the world, shaping its image and popularising democratic rules in individual countries.

INTOSAI was founded in 1953. Currently it includes 188 Supreme Audit Institutions. The Governing Board of INTOSAI consists of 18 members, representing seven regional organisations: AFROSAI, ARABOSAI, ASOSAI, CAROSAI, EUROSAI, OLACEFS, PASAI. Poland is going to replace Great Britain in the Governing Board.

Jacek Jezierski, President of the Supreme Audit Office:

In 2011, when Poland started its Presidency in the EU, NIK’s chairmanship in the European Organisation of the Supreme Audit Institutions (EUROSAI) was coming to an end. Three year’s chairmanship was evaluated by the member states so positively that NIK was appointed representative of EUROSAI in the Governing Board of the International Organisation of the Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI). Recently we have received another piece of information proving international recognition for the Polish Supreme Audit Office. We were appointed external auditor of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research - CERN. NIK will verify how money was spent on the research which led to one of the most important discoveries in the past years - confirmation of the existence of the Higgs boson.
