Soon after Poland regained its independence in 1989, NIK was headed by the late prof. Walerian Pańko who gradually transformed the Polish SAI into a body serving the state and its citizens. After his death, the President of NIK was the late prof. Lech Kaczyński who established the modern state audit with the help of the Act on the Supreme Audit Office.

On 7 February 2014, in NIK headquarters a commemorative plaque was unveiled in memory of Walerian Pańko, the first President of NIK in the Third Republic of Poland. That event together with the 95th jubilee of the establishment of NIK are to commemorate the 25th anniversary of democratic transformations in Poland.

NIK also had outstanding auditors, such as the late Michał Falzmann or the late Władysław Stasiak.

NIK President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski announced the first edition of the award of Władysław Stasiak, inspector and former NIK department director who died tragically in the Smoleńsk air crash. NIK wants to grant this award to the persons who made their environment more secure and citizen-friendly, regardless of political divisions. All NIK employees may point candidates for the award. The Award Chapter includes members of the NIK Council and Ms Barbara Stasiak, widow of the late Władysław Stasiak. The winner will receive the award (a commemorative statuette) from the hands of the President of NIK and Ms Barbara Stasiak. The award will be handed over on a yearly basis on the occasion of future anniversaries of NIK’s establishment.
