The organisation of EURO 2012 involves substantial investment works and commitments of big amounts of public funds, therefore it arouses interest of the public, the government and the Parliament, and calls for monitoring of the SAIs of the two organiser countries.
On 4 June 2008, the Letter of Intent between the Supreme Audit Office of Poland and the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine was signed in Kraków, followed by signing the common position on cooperation and the agreement on the scope and organisation of the parallel audit in November 2008.
The audit concerns, among other things, the construction of stadiums and residence centres for footballers and accompanying crews, preparation of the road, hotel and tourist infrastructure, redevelopment of public transport infrastructure in cities to host EURO 2012 matches, providing efficient border crossings, ensuring safety at sports facilities, and development and implementation of a marketing strategy to promote the two countries organising EURO 2012.
The first stage of the audit was conducted between September 2008 and January 2009 and covered the years 2007-2008. It was concluded with developing and signing a common audit report. The second stage of the audit was carried out from September 2009 to January 2010 and covered the years 2009-2010. The signing of the joint audit report is planned for mid-2010.
