Every year Polish higher education schools receive PLN 1.5 billion to conduct academic research. However, the results obtained by them are not satisfactory.A weakness of the Polish science is a small number of implementations. – You have to note, though, that many Polish scientists work abroad and draw satisfaction from that –says Mr. Buczyński. He adds that it’s not only about salary but first of all about equipment. – Today you just can’t do academic research in a garage anymore. The lack of modern scientific equipment is an uncrossable barrier.
Mr. Buczyński also points to poor relationship between Polish higher education institutions and the business practice. As a consequence, the education of students still comes down mainly to equipping them with theoretical knowledge. Having obtained a diploma they have to restart their education – this time in their work places. That’s why some graduates have problems in continuing their profession or even finding a job. But there already are some examples of universities and colleges in Poland which lay emphasis on practical education and enter close cooperation with companies and enterprises. The alumni of those schools are very much sought-after – explains Mr. Buczyński.
The Director of Science, Education and National Heritage reveals that NIK is preparing an innovative audit related to the effectiveness of education at Polish universities and colleges. –It will be a difficult audit but very necessary, in my opinion – explains Mr. Buczyński. –We want to see what the actual results of individual higher education schools are and what barriers prevent them from achieving better ones.
The results of the audit in the pipeline attract lively interest of particular Ministries and Sejm Commissions.
