On 1 August in honour of soldiers who fought during the Warsaw Uprising and citizens of the fighting capital, NIK management with President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski laid a wreath with the motto of Warsaw: semper invicta - always invincible - under the symbols of the Fighting Poland. A remembrance candle was also lit.
The discovery of the Fighting Poland symbols on the walls of NIK headquarters was of a very significant importance. Only a few similar symbols remain intact today. There are also symbols that were moved from Polna street to the front of Batory High School. The emblem on the Airmen Monument is a contemporary copy of the symbol that was painted during the occupation by Jan Bytnar ”Rudy”.
Characteristic letters ”P” and ”W” combined in the shape of an anchor were painted since 1942. Most of them were created in two Warsaw districts - Ochota and Mokotów. They encouraged Poles to fight and sustained hope for independence. Only a few of them have remained in Warsaw until today. They vanished together with the buildings destroyed by the Germans and after war they were systematically removed by the communists.
The emblems at NIK walls were hidden under a thick layer of plaster. They were found during a renovation of the facade in 2014. Preserved and displayed by the employees of the Supreme Audit Office they remain a symbol of courage, steadfastness and enormous sacrifice of Poland’s capital.
President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski will also participate in a ceremonial changing of the honorary guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which will take place at noon. At 17:00 the President will pay honours to the insurgents in front of the Gloria Victis monument at the Powązki Cemetery.
