In 2008, at the VII EUROSAI Congress in Kraków, President of the NIK Jacek Jezierski took over the Presidency of EUROSAI from Dieter Engels, the President of the SAI of Germany. President Jezierski then observed that the Presidency was not only a distinction and honour for the NIK, but, first of all, a big challenge. He also listed the main priorities of the Polish Presidency, such as, for instance, the development of a new strategy for the organisation.
After three years, at the VIII EUROSAI Congress in Lisbon, the Presidency was officially handed over to the SAI of Portugal. It was also the time to summarise the activities of the NIK in the European forum. The report on the Polish Presidency presented at the Congress summarises three years of the Polish chairmanship by enumerating its main initiatives.
Among the main contributions of the NIK’s Presidency to EUROSAI, there is the strategic plan of the Organisation, the first in its history. It sets new strategic goals of EUROSAI for the coming six years. It seems worth emphasising that all members of the organisation were engaged in the elaboration of the plan.
Activities of the NIK focused also on the implementation of conclusions and recommendations of the VII EUROSAI Congress, on realisation of the EUROSAI training strategy for the years 2008 - 2011 and on strengthening cooperation, both within the organisation and with other Regional Working Groups of INTOSAI. In its efforts to realise the recommendations of the VII EUROSAI Congress, the NIK undertook an international audit of programmes and measures aimed to increase employment of disabled persons.
The NIK also organised numerous seminars which provided a platform for exchange of knowledge and experience among representatives of European SAIs. They were dedicated to, among many, International Standards of Supreme Audit Institutions (ISSAIs), communication between SAIs and the public opinion and performance auditing with regard to social programmes for professional activation of the disabled.
