Why is modern hospital equipment unused? [video]

Poland received nearly PLN 4 billion from the EU funds for the medical equipment modernisation. Most of the existing hospital equipment is old and used. However, the purchase of new medical devices did not bring about expected improvement of patients’ condition. Piotr Wasilewski from the Health Department of NIK talks about the reasons of this state of affairs.

As many as one third of hospitals audited by NIK which bought specialist equipment from the EU funds did not use it as planned. The number of actually provided services was smaller (at times much smaller) than forecasted. Additionally, as a result of currently used purchase procedures in some towns or cities there is a deficit of specialist equipment and in others it is in excess.
