The European University Institute (EUI) in Florence is an international institution for doctorate and post-doctorate studies and research in the scope of economy, law, history, as well as political and social sciences. The institute is an integral international organization, financed by the Member States and the European Commission. Further resources are secured by scientific research grants.
The financial management and budget execution of the Institute is assessed by two external auditors - each from a different country. They are appointed by the High Council - the main managing body of the EUI. This year the Council selected Jacek Mazur PhD, Advisor to the President of NIK. His four-year term of office started on 1 July.
Annually the EUI organises around 400 seminars and conferences attended by prominent scientists and politicians from all over the world. More than 30 per cent of the EUI alumni have top managerial or academic positions. Currently at the EUI there are 40 doctorate students from Poland, who constitute one of the most numerous ethnic groups at the university.
The Supreme Audit Office supports the efforts of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education aimed at increasing the number of Poles among the EUI academic staff. Since the establishment of the Institute 40 years ago, there were only two Polish professors employed - Wojciech Sadurski and Jan Zielonka. However, this requires a more frequent participation of the persons concerned in the open international contests. The President of NIK intends to ask the chancellors of the most prominent Polish universities to help our lecturers in obtaining a position at the European University Institute. The President will address a similar request to the Minister of Science and Higher Education.
