The Polish Supreme Audit Office acts as external auditor of the European Organisation for Nuclear Research. By holding this function NIK is mandated to verify credibility of CERN financial statements and its Pension Fund. The Polish SAI also wants to help the Organisation to enhance its governance process. While staying in Warsaw, the President of CERN Council, prof. Agnieszka Zalewska, elaborated on successes, challenges and needs of the largest European scientific project.
The European Organisation for Nuclear Research is a science and research centre. It was founded in 1954 and now associates 21 member states, including Poland. CERN activity is financed by member states which pay annual contributions proportional to their national income.
The CERN Council appointed the Polish Supreme Audit Office as an external auditor of CERN for the years 2013-2015, although Poland is not one of the Organisation founders (it joined CERN after 1989). Soon after that appointment a Polish representative - prof. Agnieszka Zalewska - became the President of CERN Council.
