On 23 May in the Senate a nationwide academic conference was held. Its subject was the guarantee of protection of individuals’ constitutional rights and freedoms. The meeting was organised by the International Institute of the Civil Society (Polish: MISO). Its participants debated on the effectiveness of the protection of rights and freedoms of Polish citizens. The attendees’ presentations dealt not only with theories but also with practical solutions in that area. They could learn what the protection looked like in real life in administrative courts, common courts and the Supreme Court. A lecture was delivered on the tasks of the Ministry of Justice in that respect and the guarantee of the protection of fundamental rights in Poland from the viewpoint of the European Court of Human Rights.
NIK President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski talked about NIK’s role in the protection of human rights and freedoms. This issue is of special interest to the Supreme Audit Office. In the past years NIK has audited among others observance of rights of national and ethnic minorities, of excluded individuals, disabled persons and patients. NIK also took under the microscope the acquisition and processing of telecommunications data as well as the functioning of video surveillance system in Poland. ”As an institution of public trust we are trying to respond to every alarming phenomenon reported to us by citizens. As the supreme body of state audit NIK plays a special role. It’s not only the guardian of public spending but also of compliance with the law” - the NIK President stressed.
