The audit has been ordered by NIK President Marian Banaś. Thousands of Poles could have been murdered in the camp. In nearby forests, the Germans shot dead tens of thousands of prisoners throughout the entire war period. Among them was Archbishop Antoni Nowowiejski and Bishop Leon Wetmański from Płock. Sister Mieczysława Kowalska from Przasnysz died of emaciation. All three were beatified by Pope John Paul II. The horror of the stay in KL Soldau is being recalled by three former prisoners of the camp: Ms Wiktoria Cendrowska, Ms Henryka Taube, and Ms Teresa Krowicka.
