NIK about sound walls and noise in big cities

At the time of the road construction boom before Euro 2012, noise regulations in Poland were stricter than in other EU member states, e.g. in Germany or Great Britain. It fostered construction of a big number of sound walls on roadsides. The more so because sound walls were a preferred noise protection in the Polish law. In October 2012, in response to criticism concerning the construction of sound walls, instead of using alternative noise reduction methods, such as building road banks, greenbelts or reducing the night-time speed limit – permissible noise standards were raised to a level which according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) may pose a threat to people’s health, especially in large cities.
