On 10 April 2010, 96 people died in Tu-154M plane crash near Smoleńsk. There were four NIK employees on board: President of the Republic of Poland Lech Kaczyński, Aleksander Szczygło, Sławomir Skrzypek and Władysław Stasiak.
The memory of those who died is still alive in the Supreme Audit Office. They are remembered not only as friends or relatives but also as people who took great efforts to build Poland and devoted the best years of their lives to our country.
As a sign of utmost respect for the passengers of the President’s plane flying to Smoleńsk on 10 April 2010, NIK President Krzysztof Kwiatkowski laid a wreath at the grave of the late President and his wife at Wawel Castle in Cracow. In Warsaw, the top management of NIK and Barbara Stasiak, the widow of the late Władysław Stasiak, laid flowers and lit a votive candle at the commemorative plaque dedicated to Lech Kaczyński as a former president of NIK. Today Krzysztof Kwiatkowski will also take part in a ceremony commemorating the victims of the Smoleńsk air crash.
The Supreme Audit Office will always remember those persons who had devoted their work and their hearts to NIK, as well as other victims of the fatal flight of 10 April 2010.
